INTRODUCTION Applied microbiology is the discipline that studies diverse applications of micro-organism and their products to various areas of human Endeavour. The areas of application are medicine, agriculture, environment, food, chemical and biotechnology industries. However, the applications are deeply rooted in sound understanding of the basic aspects of micro-organisms viz: the structure, classification, physiology, metabolism and genetics.Philosophy The undergraduate programme is designed to prepare students to acquire board- base knowledge of general microbiology as well as specialized branches of microbiology: The skills acquired from general microbiology will be useful in solving problems in specific areas like medical/ veterinary diagnosis, agriculture, biotechnology, environment and in food and chemical industries e.g. brewing, yeast and alcohol manufacturing. Supernumerary microbiological duties in research institution. The programme covers course works with relevant practical, project reports, tutorial and industrial work experience to help students to practicalize and to apply the acquired knowledge themselves. Emergence of new pathogens in recent years has increased the challenges posed by micro-organism to scientists and recent advances in molecular biology and genetic engineering are being used for studying these organisms. Therefore, the courses in these areas are aimed at helping the students to acquire up-to- date knowledge in the relevant areas for application in the various fields of Microbiology. In general, the programme is designed to produce graduates who can use the knowledge of Microbiology for self sustenance |
